A Taste of the Senses IV: Corpus Novum

A TASTE OF THE SENSES
Series IV: CORPUS NOVUM
11 Oct 2024
contrapuntal Studio Fitzroy, Melbourne

A Taste of the Senses IV: Corpus Novum – Rite of Spring marked the second Melbourne edition and fourth in the immersive multi-sensory A Taste of the Senses series, continuing the evolution of contrapuntal’s artist-led ecosystem in Fitzroy. Yet another sell out event, the evening centred on renewal, transformation, and Spring’s return.

Guests experienced a five-course Kaiseki-inspired degustation by Komeyui, inspired by live performance, smoking ceremony, and L Acoustics’ signature spatial sound, flown in from Los Angeles.

Drawing on the primal energy of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, a seminal composition which revolutionised 20th century ballet and orchestral storytelling, Skepper shaped the dinner as a communal rite: moving from smoke and earth to fire and earth, with red, green, and gold tones flowing across each course.

Fresh from his sold-out US tour and the world premiere of WAVES (a Nobel Prize science project), and studio work with L-Acoustics at their Westlake Village studios in Los Angeles, Skepper spearheaded contrapuntal’s next chapter for his Melbourne audience: an ambitious independent arts institution rooted in sound, art, and tech driven sensory design.

Corpus Novum – Secret Warehouse Art Rave

11 October 2025 | Fitzroy, Melbourne

Following the dinner ritual, the night transformed into Corpus Novum, the seoncd secret warehouse art rave celebrating Spring’s vitality through sound, movement, and light. Through a leak to iconic Street Press Beat Magazine the crowd flocked to hear  Benjamin Skepper (LIVE), DJ KITI, and Amanaska, showcasing the L-Acoustics L-ISA immersive sound system. contrapuntal  is the first Australian presentation of the technology as it is intended to be used, after Skepper’s sessions at the Westlake Village studio in Los Angeles. This has since been written extensively about in CX Magazine, Australasia’s leading tech publication dedicated to AV technology. Read the feature here.

The warehouse once again became an immersive sonic playground, merging deep electro acoustics and electronic performances, experimental sound design, and communal dance and joy. As a grassroots fundraiser for contrapuntal’s Fitzroy studio, Corpus Novum brought together Melbourne’s creative underground, art philanthropists, and curious party lovers, to support the birth of Melbourne’s newest artist-led cultural platform at scale.

Series IV affirmed the core vision of A Taste of the Senses: to fuse gastronomy, spatial sound, performance, and installation into shared rituals that transform how we gather, create, and experience art and each other.
